Murano is a series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon, northern Italy. Its reputation as a center for glassmaking was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and the destruction of the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their furnaces to Murano in 1291. Today, Murano is known for its art glass and it’s long history of innovations in glassmaking has not been outshone by its artistic fame. It is still considered Europe’s major center for luxury glass and the term Murano Glass is closely associated with high quality products and skilled artisans.
